In 1990 I wrote about the C1 53-55 Corvette fuel sender and I'm posting it here to help owners again.
If careful you can pry the side cover off to clean the rheostat , or the float arm button which causes the gage to jump around . If the float arm button has wear or worn down , by bending it and giving it more tension will correct the contact and give a more steady reading. Two things usely cause your bad reading.
1.You loose ground contact in your harness or the float arm button has worn down.
2. The brass float may have a pin hole , filling it up with gas.
Again E-Bay is a good place to find a truck sender from 53 to 54 which is the same as the 1953 to 1955 Corvette.
The cleaning can be done on all units from 53 to 62.
Yes the 53 to 54 are 6V but the sender is "neither" and will work in the 12V 55.This is not hard to do and can save your original sender.
