is it worth protecting in some way? Like smearing on a bit of grease or something. I know I will never look at it again but someday another owner of this '59 might.

I would just leave it as is. Putting grease or something on it could attract dirt, etc over time and ultimately make it harder to read. If you are concerned about keeping it readable, you might want to consider doing a quick cleaning once a year of the area. That should keep it in good shape. -

If your frame is down to the metal, it would be worth putting something on it. The impression of the frame number creates a cavity that water and debris can collect in and continue to rust. If your car doesn't see regular road use this might not be as big of and issue. EricComment
