C2 Rear Hatch Spring

Has anyone changed the spring in the rear hatch on a C2 convertible??? If so, how is it accomplished and where are replacements available? Thanks to all and a Safe and Happy Holiday. Bill #20328

The replacement springs are available from Long Island Corvette. You'll want to hit them with some overspray that matches the exterior of your car. I replaced mine last summer. Took off the deck lid and crawled in the convertible compartment as the three bolts that hold the spring assembly are real hard to get to. Fold back the carpet. There are two bolts top and one on the bottom. The bottom of the assembly has a couple of shims. Remove the assembly and take the assembly to a vice. Wear you saftey glasses and gloves to pry the springs off the assembly. Mount the new springs on the middle of the three tension adjustments and reinstall the assembly. If this does not make sense just reply and I'll try to clarify my answer. Some guys change the springs while the assembly is still in the car. I can't do it that way.

If you put the new spring in the bottom slot/catch you can pry it up over the first slot with a screwdriver with the decklid held up all the way (taking your time and being careful). This way you don't have to readjust anything.

I believe that they are available also from Doc Rebuild, C Central and others. Probably ole Joe Ray has a few on the shelf
