Is it the extended length of the rear shocks that prevent the trailing arms from dropping low enough to cause the half-shafts to be at an angle that causes binding when rotating?

Yes, shock travel determines the amount of suspension rebound travel.
The early half-shaft end flanges allowed the half shaft yoke to ground out at full rebound and this part went through two subsequent design iterations. I'm not sure which version '67s had as OE, but the final version (that I believe is still available through service parts) was designed such that the outboard half shaft yokes should not contact the flange at full rebound, so the axles should move smoothly throughout their full rotation without increasing in turning resistance and raising the wheel through the interference angle.

Re: '67 REAR DRIVETRAIN BINDING...
That's interesting...hopefully I'm worrying about nothing. It just seemed kind of strange because I would think that under some momentary circumstance the rear suspension could be at this angle with parts hitting each other that shouldn't. Well, guess I'll put the body on tomorrow and assume I'll have no problem later. Thanks- Top

Re: '67 REAR DRIVETRAIN BINDING...
Rob - one other point, the GM shocks have the correct extend length to prevent too much "drop" as well. I have seen posts from Joe L in years past on this. I know some of the afermarket shocks have too much travel and can allow this situation, of course, when the car is on the ground, the only time this would happen is in very spirited (airbore) driving in all probabilty. Besides, with the degree of care you have been using on your assembly, you probably are buying that NOS set of shocks on eBay (oops, they were fronts)...Craig- Top

Re: '67 REAR DRIVETRAIN BINDING...
I installed the Delco shocks that Joe recommended, that look like the originals. I got a lot of good responses regarding this and the consensus is don't worry about it so I'm putting the body on today and getting on with finishing it.- Top
