I have about 25 AC Delco PF 25 oil filters on the shelf. They are the last of the discontinued blue ones. I plan on using these over the next 12 years for my own personal use. The question is: Should I coat the rubber rings with oil or some rubber protectant to keep them from aging over the years? Will the internal pleated paper hold up that long? Thanks Bob

Re: PF 25's
The shelf life is indefinite. I wouldn't do anything other than storing them in a cool place, free of ozone and UV light - just like you would want to store tires. The place should also not be too damp to keep any light corrosion from developing on the base plate, which is uncoated steel.

PS
The Toyota filters I buy at the dealer for my '91 MR2 (they go on sale frequently for about three bucks) have plastic shrink wrap over the base, and the gasket is preoiled.
Now that's attention to detail! The gasket is orange, so it might be silicone, If so the shelf life is probably at least 50 years!!!

Re: duke, they need to keep them dry
Actually, Clem, the filter says "made in the USA" - I would imagine by one of the major filter manufacturers to Toyota's specs.
The instructions silkscreened on the housing are in both English and Kanji, so maybe some end up on the boat going east.
Those 100K double platinum spark plugs in you C5 are Densos.

Re: duke, they need to keep them dry
Duke, when Toyota changed over to US filter production, the US filter was about 2/3 the price of the Japanese filter. I thought it should have cheaper than that.
I asked the parts guy which US company was manufacturing the filters for Toyota; he wasn't certain (or deliberately vague), but FWIW, he thought the manufacturer was Wix.
Toyota's most common US filter (22RE, V6, etc) no longer has the plastic covering over the end like the original Japanese version. It also only has a black rubber O-ring, but then the Japanese version never had the orange O-ring either.- Top
