    Roland-----

First of all, "2712" would not be the part number for a GM balancer, original or not. Otherwise, it depends whether you're talking about a current SERVICE balancer or an original PRODUCTION balancer. The original PRODUCTION balancer for you application was GM #3861968. This was a 6" OD balancer of "stepped" configuration, with the smaller 4-1/2" OD "step" on the FRONT. It was available in SERVICE until November, 1965.

Since June, 1971, the SERVICE part number for a balancer for your application has been GM #3896904. This is a non-stepped balancer of 6-1/8" OD and 3/4" thickness. It remains available from GM to this very day. Its configuration is significantly different than the original, but it will SERVICE your application perfectly.
