Bench bleeding the master cylinder is best done OFF the car. It's beeen disciussed many times on the board and should be in the archives. However, I'll go over it briefly:
1) mount master cylinder in a vice BY CLAMPING ON THE FLANGE;
2) install bench bleeder kit available from auto parts stores so that fittings are installed in both ports and tubes curve back into the respective master cylinder resevoir halves;
3) fill the master cylinder with fluid;
4) using a dowel or rod that fits into the master cylinder piston recess, pump the master cylinder until all air is expelled from it as evidenced by the cessation of air bubbles appearing in the fluid. It's best to tilt the master cylinder at a few different angles and repeat the process.
Complete instructions will usually be provided with the master cylinder bench bleeding kit that you purchase at an auto parts store.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
