Can a clutch disc be installed with the wrong side facing the flywheel, or will it only go on one way?

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
There is a wrong way and a right way.lay disc only against the flywheel, then rotate the disc with slight pressure to keep disc and flywheel in contact. if you have disc backwards, snout of disc or its anti-chatter springs will contact end of crank or flywheel to crank fastners.when installed properly, no interference. mike- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
Mike
I have the body suspended above the chassis, ready to mount and this came to mind. It's a LUK clutch set. The disc had a nose that extended out on one side of the disc aboaut 1/2" if I remember right. I believe I installed this side towards the flywheel. Before I drop the body I wanted to double check. The assembly manual I used said to install the disc so the springs stick out towards the transmission, but now I have this funny feeling it could be in backwards. I thought I'd pull the tranny back an inch or so and look in and see which way the nose of the disc is facing.- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
Joe,
I installed the disc with the springs sticking up towards the transmission. The manual I used said the "hub" and the springs go towards the transmission. The nose was on the opposite side of the springs, so I installed it with the nose towards the flywheel. I want to be sure before I drop the body on.- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
Rob dont laugh here but any time I have a funny feeling some thing is not correct it worth a look.If its not the clutch being correct,It may be a wrench you left in there? who knows call it a sixth sence if it doesnt feel write to you (not to the touch feel right)but you think somethin is not right open it up and see what you find.
Good luck
historicly anytime I think to my self "You know I should recheck that" its is normally not a waste of time- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
Larry,
I'll call www.dialaclutch.com tomorrow, which is where I ordered the LUK clutch set from. (Either I lost them or it came with no instructions nor was the disc marked as to which side faced the flywheel). Guess I should have waited and installed in the a.m. when I could have called them with any questions. I'm sure they can tell me tomorrow morning which way the nose on the disc should go. I wanted to lower the body tonight, but I wouldn't be worth the effort to make corrections later. Thanks...- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
Joe,
I called the tech support line at dialaclutch and two different people told me the "snout" on the hub goes towards the transmission. I told them the raised spring assembly should go towards the transmission, which makes the "snout" face the flywheel. They referred me to Luke aftermarket service to speek to their technician. He got a disc like the one I installed and told me that, as you said, the spring package goes towards the transmission which made the snout face the flywheel. Good thing I didn't listen to the first two tech people at dialaclutch. Glad I don't have to pull it apart. By the way, why is the clutch inspection plate called that if you can't see the clutch through it?- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
Rob------
If, by "snout", you are referring to the extension of the center splined hub (which is about 1-1/2" OD), then that does go forward, towards the flywheel.
The part which you are referring to is NOT called a "clutch inspection cover"; its proper terminology is "clutch housing cover". The "clutch housing" is the part that, in the vernacular, is known as the bellhousing. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: CLUTCH DISC INSTALLATION...
I just today installed a Luk RepSet (04-084) that I bought from dialaclutch.com. The disc was indeed marked "install this side to flywheel." BTW the disc was made by Sachs.- Top
