    automatic trans

Does anyone know of a GOOD auto trans person in the Houston area? After 3 times out in my garage,on my back,it is time to find someone who can actually fix one,not just replaced worn parts. If not does anyone know of a source for th 400s that are already rebuilt.I am not that interested in pulling the trans again. At this point I am tempted to just buy a new/rebuilt unit.I promise the time and money I have already spent would equal a new trans, wich i talked myself out of in the beginning

Andrew I don't know if turbo 400's are available through AC Delco as a rebuilt transmissin or not. AC Delco did offer rebuilt 700R4's in the past and they rebuilt them with all the changes which made them better that what was put in the early Corvettes. I recommend you check and see if you can get a AC Delco rebuilt turbo 400. They were used in several years of Corvettes and a good one may be available from someone like Contempory Corvettes who specialize in selling used parts from Corvettes. I would think that there has to be a good transmission shop somewhere in Houston. Some people say to find out where the local police/sheriffs departments take their cars for automatic transmission service.

Call Nabors Corvette restorations and ask who they use or if they rebuild.
They are one of the best corvette restorations shops in the country and I believe Gary Nabors is now holding one of the NCRS officer positions. Good luck.

Thanks.I live just around the corner from the Nabors shop.I will drop in after the holidays. The trans never shifts itself into 3rd.If I shift it manually it will shift into 3rd.I have lots of experience with Mercedes automatics, but this was my first try at a 400.The problem is that no 3rd gear is why I rebuilt it in the first place.Nothing have done effects it in the least.I took it out and took it to trans shop, they went threw it,put a new valve body on and it still shifts exactly the same-no worse-no better. When you tear down a trans you almost always find a "smoking gun"that causes your problem,I or any trans shop has found this as of yet.I am begining to suspect a pouris case,or possibly warped case at some point.If/when I take it back out if I dont see with my own eyes a "smoking gun"I would perfer just to replace the trans completely.

Sounds like your Detent solenoid is stuck open or not properly adjusted. Disconnect the plug on the side and using a hot lead touch one of the two male prong with the other prong grounded to hear a CLICK , will be hard to hear! and if not the switch is bad.(But also do this any way)== If it clicks check your adjustment or connection is good or grounded. (That is what shifts your trans to third). No rebuilder checks this out of the car. This may save you all that trouble.Because you said it will shift manuly. Let me know.

Roy,sounds like this is the problem, but I have not checked. Not just one but 2 trans shops told me that it did not even need to plugged in.It never has been plugged as long as I have owned car,I also have never had 3rd.Where does that wire generate from?

              Thanks Andrew

I also meant to say that you should also check to see that the other detents are correct. If you disconnect the ROD from the trans. and move the trans lever in to third gear detent, then move your hand shifter in to third gear detent. Then check to see if the trans ROD is adjusted to meet both Trans and shifter pins. If the ROD is off between 2 and 3 as you drive off from a start IN drive , it also may keep the trans. from up shifting
