    C2 Rr wheel bearings

    I am about to install my new rear wheel bearings on my '65. Can someone please tell me the correct place to position the dial indicator plunger pin on the spindle for the measurement to be taken?
    Merry Christmas all.

    Frank - use a magnetic base, and position the indicator tip inline with the spindle itself, on the end where the nut clamps the flange. Usually, this is done with a setup tool instead of the spindle installed, but with the shims in place and the nut torqued to 100 lb/ft....Craig

      Thanks Craig;
      I have a magnetic base for the dial indicator, and we whipped up a set up tool on my friends brand new lathe. What I'm measuring is total in-out movement to the center of the car? For some reason I thought it may be measured at the inside tip of the spindle side to side. Do you take the measurments with or without grease?

        Hi Frank - the measurement should be taken dry for accuracy, grease will give you improper results and will make a mess to boot. This measurement is direct end play, not lateral play. Tapered roller bearings will naturally have some lateral play when there is end play present, but you want to measure the true end play, so you move the tool you made in and out in the plane of the tool itself. Lathes are fun aren't they? I find myself using my old girl Atlas frequently......Craig

          Thanks Craig;
          Sorry to take so long to reply. Christmas etc. Yes I've always had fun with lathes so it didn't take long for us to make up that tool but I didn't think to make provision for a hex on the wheel side for tightening so I'm going to have to weld a big nut on the end to grab.
