    71 numbers check

    A couple questions...

1-where can I find the numbers stamped into the frame?

2-My block casting # reads 3963512 T (that is the Ls-5 454, but what does the T stand for?)

3-On the driver side of the block near the back it says "hi perf K PASS 20" what does the "K pass 20" mean?

    thanks

    Re: 71 numbers check

I am not sure about the K or T, but PAS is passenger car - HI PER for high performance. The 20 is the mold number of the mold that the block was cast in. The casting process is a long story. Too long for a post here.

There is an interesting story describing the process of casting brake master cylinders in a back issue of th Restorer Magazine. Read that story and imagine the size increase necessary to accomodate a cylinder case instead of a brake master cylinder. That will give you some idea of the complexity of the process.

My guess is that the T following the casting number stands for Tonowanda, NY, where the big block engines are assembled (and likely cast). Perhaps others with more knowledge can confirm this.
