    61 Trunk Markings

I am in the process of stripping my 61 and again need the help of the forum! My 61 is supposed to have only one repaint. After stripping the Jewel Blue second paint and what I thought to be the original Sateen silver I have found a dark gray to a blackish brown undercoating. It is my understanding the undercoating (primers) would not be black, so I started to strip the rear trunk panel in hopes to reveal the color. I striped the center panel and found the numbers 313 in yellow crayon. I also striped the right side and found no reference to paint. The back wall has some type of undercoating over the crayon that is hard to strip, but the balance of the trunk area seems to have the silver over bare fiberglass. Does the number 313 represent a production sequence?

    Thanks for all the help!

Ray - My guess, 313 would be a sequence number and should probably be repeated in other locations on car. (Firewall, engine side and door panels). Color info on 61/62 is provided on the bulkhead behind the passenger seat and will be written like - Red, Ivory, Maroon, etc. - no numbers. You will have to carefully strip the paint behind the seat to uncover the C1 "Trim Tag"... Best, Dennis

      Ray,
The original primer will be a dark brown as you described, and yes it is a bitch to strip since it soaks up stripper like a sponge! As Dennis said, the color will be behind the seat on your year.

        Original Primer...

This brown stuff is baked at the factory. My experience is that trying to use paint stripper on it is a waist. When I get down to that stuff, I either wet sand it off - or sometimes steel wool and lacquer thinner work well. Probably, if it were all in great shape, we'ed be better off leaving it in place. DC

Where would the trim tag be located in a 59? Same place? What do I look for?

              Kevin!

I believe that the 59 will be in the back of the trunk area bulkhead on the right side. (Towards the seats) This would be behind the cardboard insert. This is the first place that I checked on the 61, but as Dennis Clark posted; "61 and 62 are on the bulkhead behind the passenger seat." I believe the trim tag they are referring to is nothing more than the crayon markings. Hopefully someone else will confirm this.

              Hope this helps
