    Oil Pan ID

How do I identify the part number or application for an oil pan I have. Long, long ago, when I picked it up somewhere, I was told that it was the large capacity - high performance one for a '62 Corvette. It does seem deeper than usual and does have a "trap door" in it. If it fits a small block, and fits over the front suspension of my '62, can I assume it is correct? Aren't oil pans designed to fit around the car? That is, a C-1 would not fit a C-2, because of clearance differences around the front suspension. Is this corect? It appears to be Chevrolet.

Does it have any embossed grooves in the sides? Where is the drain plug? Also, look for where the dipstick fits.

Hi Chris-If you have a 62 Judging Manual, it identifies oil pans as being 5 quart, three step smooth bottom, with a 7/8" drain plug located at the back level on centerline. I believe the 62 version also has only one vertical indentation on each side at the deepest of the three steps (vs three). Hope this helps. Dick

62 is very well described in '62 judging manual. 63-65 is 6 quart, not five and carries the sump farther foreward. The oil pump pickups are even different. If you are looking at the pan and reading the manual, It will be immediately obvious if it is a '62 pan. also a dead giveaway is the location of the drain plug in the bottom of the sump for '62 vs the rear edge for 63-up
