    '71 Radial Tire Size Question

A few sources, including the TIM&JG state that 215/70R-15 is the recommended radial replacement size for F70-15. The tire size specs I have seen bear this out; however, none of the measurement charts I have seen use an 8 inch rim. In fact, most only show a range of 5.5-7.0 inches. So while the dimensions match up on paper, they are taken on a narrower rim.

I don't like the look of 225s or 235s- they are too massive, and I want the stock size appearance. Is the 215/70R indeed the tire to use? Also, I want to do the white stripe version, so I am considering having Diamondback make them up. Any other options out there for this size tire with the thin white stripe of early '70s? THANKS.

    Charlie----

In my opinion, the 215-70-15 tire size is the closest thing that you can get to the original tire size in OVERALL dimensions. I do realize that this size is rarely, if ever, shown in tire charts as mounted on an 8" rim. Presumably, that means that an 8" rim is not an "approved" rim width for this tire. Nevertheless, many folks have used this tire on 8" rims with no problems, whatsoever. Mounted on an 8" rim, the dimensions will not vary very much from those shown in the charts.

The real problem will be finding this size tire in higher speed-rated tire, if that's important to you. Finding it in a tire which is acceptable for most normal street driving will not be too difficult, though.

      Charlie,

"I" like 225/70-15's if you are looking for a tire that is close to original. "I" think the 215 is a little small. Only exception to that would be if you purchase BFG T/A's. They run big for all sizes in comparison to other brands. With BFG I would use 215's.

If you want a "healthier look, I would and do use 245/60-15's on 8 inch rally's. This size fits great and looks "marvelous". Again, if BFG T/A's use a 235/60-15.

By the speed rating that matches your driving style.

        Charley:

Michelin Symmetry. Available at Wal-mart. Good looking tire with the narrow white. Smooth riding and quiet. They are standard equipment on some new cars. I have no idea of any speed rating on these tires.

Re: '71 Radial Tire Size Question

The 215/70R-15 has the same revs per mile - 775 - as the F70-15, however, I recommend 225/70R-15s (760 revs/mi) as the best replacement tire for all Sharks including the '68 models with 7" wide wheels. The 225/70 is equivalent to the GR70-15 that became OE in '73, and 225/70R-15s replaced this tire in '78.

In this size their are three V-rated police pursuit tires to choose from, which will maximize performance and safety.

If you are a NCRS member, you should read the two articles in the Spring and Summer issues of The Restorer earlier this year on how to select replacement tires for vintage Corvettes.

I use BFG T/A 215/70R/15 on my 71. I like the look and have had no problems with their use.

Re: '71 Radial Tire Size Question

Thanks for all the input. I think to get the most stock look, the 215 is the size to use. The 225-235-245s may fit, but don't quite look right to me. There is little chance of this car hitting triple digit speeds while I own it (been there, done that), so high-speed ratings are not needed. I will actually look for a tire with a tame tread pattern- the old F70 was none too aggressive.
