I am putting back together a 1956 Corvette, SN #2870. I am getting varied opinions on what my possible build date would have been. One educated guess was June 8. If June 8 is accurate, I think what I should be looking for is an April or May engine block. Any opinions and help defining the correct date, and any assistance in finding correct parts for under the hood, would be greatly appreciated.

Re: C1 engine date code
Mark, thanks for the quick reply. I need everything for under the hood (oil pan, exhaust manifolds, block). I've got 762 heads, but the dates are wrong. I've got a couple of 2x4 setups but one is too early with 1122 and 1114 carbs. The other setup has 1299s. (I have a couple of those.) I would prefer 1151s with my thinking that the June date is mid-year. I also need all my dash knobs.
Thanks again-

Re: C1 engine date code
Scott,
My 56 (4363) was built on Sep 7 (Fri). The first car on that date was 4360 and the last car was 4378, if that helps your guesstimation.
This info was provided to me by Jack Knudsen in 1981 at the NCRS nationals in St Louis. Jack used to work at the St Louis plant. He came to the NCRS event at the motel and had this little note pad with start and ending VINs for several years, including 56. He provided this info to a few people (including me) at first during the meet, then someone pissed him off (I have never been able to find out how or why!!!!) and he refused to give out any more VIN info. I REALLY suspect his DAILY production VINs are probably the most accurate numbers on the planet, but I don't know how to get in touch with him, or, what, if anything, he has done with his note pad.- Top
