Wayne,

Assuming that the cage nut is rusted, what happens if it breaks off when I'm trying to get the bolt loose? Is this piece repro'd? And if it is, is it easy to reattach when all is said and done?

Perhaps I should live with my rusty washers!!

John --- I see that the cage, square nut, and aluminum rivets are sold by Paragon (and maybe others). Functionally, the cage is only used to hold the square nut inside during factory installation, when the bolt is torqued from the underside -- otherwise it's a 2-man job. I'd at least try soaking, as George suggested, and if it looks like the nut is so rusted on the bolt that it will deform the cage, you can either quit right there, OR, drill out the 2 rivets per mount and remove cage, have helper hold square nut with large crescent wrench while you reef on the bolt from the wheelwell. Your choice to replace cage or not, as it's hidden by the carpet.
