    body mounts

I have a 67 convertible that I believe needs replacement body mounts (it sounds like the drive shaft is hitting the body during hard acceleration or if I have a passenger in the car). Does this sound like I need new body mounts? I have replaced cushion on the front of the differential but the drive shaft still hits the body. If this sounds like I need new body mounts can they be replaced without completely lifting the body off the frame? Any help is appreciated!!

    Re: body mounts

I also have a question about replacing body mounts on a '67 convertible. I've noticed that the washers on the mounts at/near the top of the rear wheel are very worn (rusty/disintigrating).

Am I looking for a nightmare if I try to replace these? The body mounts themselves look ok, but I don't want to loose a mount if the washers completely disintegrate. I've been told that I might be better off leaving things alone.

Any advice would be appreciated. John R. #31818

No need to pull the body....

just unhook and unbolt evething that is attached to the body. Steering coupler, brake line from master cyl. etc. Unbolt all mounts, get a good hyd. jack, a 2x6, raise the body just high enough to replace the mounts, one side at a time. You msy not have to go through this, check the condition of your engine and transmission mounts.

Saturate the bolt & nut with penetrating oil..

for about a week, keep it saturated and let the oil do its magic. Then attempt to remove the nut. If it comes off, you're in business.

I too would suggest looking at your tranny mount. A friend's '76 (with auto) had a similar problem with the driveshaft hitting the underbody on occasion. It turned out to be a broken transmission-to-frame mount.

                    Re: body mounts (rear)

John, George is right about the soaking; let me add that if the washer on the wheelwell side of the rear mount cushions is rusted, I'll bet that the square nut in its cage retainer on the inside is even worse (convertible rear compartment leakage). Usually the torque required to loosen this nut deforms the cage or breaks it loose from the small rivets holding it to the fibreglass body.

Craing, are you sure that you need a body re-fit? How is your rear spring -flat or a slight positive arch? Are you shocks still OK? Are the front springs OK? I don't see how body mounts can cause your drive shaft to hit the body! Are your engine mounts both intact, as well as your transmission rubber mount? I would check out the dimensions of the body before I did a body mount re-fit. I assume that you have the Assembly Manual for your car? It has all of the dimensions in it. Gary

I have seen/ heard of this happening before, even to the point where the driveshaft yokes rip a hole in the floorpan. You may need to add a couple more shims to each body mount location to raise the body up just a bit. OR, the rubber cushions may need to be replaced (or both.)
