    62 Intake Manifold

E-Bay #2450812331. Could someone take a look at this and explain what it is? I e-mailed the seller and he claims they were blocked off at the factory. Any truth to this? never saw one like this before.

GM factory small blocks and big blocks don't have rear water ports running across the manifold. The only water channel on the intake is between the front ports by the thermostat housing. If you'll notice there isn't even a channel that runs between where the rear ports would be. It does look like it's missing the belly pan though. Hope this helps.

Terry, after looking at it again it may have been milled on the sides. I'm by no means an expert on '62 intakes but most GM intakes I've seen have indentations where the rear water ports are. I believe GM did this to improve sealing around the port. Someone more familiar with '62 intakes would be able to tell you if they were made without the indentations.

Well that's what I thought, but I've been wrong before. It just looked too smooth to me. Anyone know how much would have to be milled to get rid of indentation. Wouldn't this cause alinement problems?

There are normally indentations, perhaps 1/4" deep, at the rear of the manifold where the water passages of the head(s) meets the manifold. I don't know what the purpose was for this design, perhaps sealing. There isn't alot of material to work with here if there was corrosion damage that had to be repaired, thus the indentations look to have been filled in during the welding repair process and then milled to get an even surface with the rest of the manifold. You wouldn't want to have the manifold milled too much or the runners wouldn't line up properly with heads. The bosses look good on the top side right above these passages from what can be seen in the photos. The heat shield on the bottom of the manifold is missing and is normally rivited in place.
