    Battery "Toppers"

Last year, in Orlando, I saw what they call a "Tar Topper" from, I think Lectric Limited. It was a plastic cover that slipped over a regular battery to make it look like a tar top, caps and all. My question is: Do they make a "topper" for the R59 '67 battery? I think it would be a great way to get the look of an original type battery with the performance of a new maintenance-free battery.

I might be wrong, but I believe those "toppers" are designed to protect the repro tar top batteries from dust, dirt, finger imprints, etc. I don't believe that they're designed to duplicate a tar top battery. Chuck

Tar Topper battery covers are available for Optima and Group 24 batteries to provide the "Vintage" look. Not sure how much they add. Poly Tar batteries are also available for the solid axles that are said to prevent dust, dirt etc..

I tried one on my '66 about a year ago and ended up returning it. If I remember right I couldn't get the original style cables to get a good grip on the posts. Maybe the thickness of the plastic or taper on the posts. Pat G.

Mike, Thanks for the quick response. Maybe I should re-phrase my inquiry: Does someone make a Topper that is made to look like an R59 '67 battery (includes fake caps, with correct script)? I saw one at a chapter meet about 5 or 6 years ago, but wasn't sure if it was a topper or top half of an actual battery case.Thanx!

I would think that a topper is not intended for NCRS judging since the side lovers in a mid year will do the tell tale on the battery's side appearance. This is assuning that the top looks good enough to past initial first look. If the caps are not real the gig is up.
