When did they switch over to the "519" block for C1 corvettes? Colvin's book states that "519"s were used in '59 and possibly for late '58 but it is unverified. When a new casting was introduced did it go to production as soon as the foundry started casting them? Did they run multiple 283 castings during the same period? It would seem odd to me that they would hold off on putting the castings into production for 2+ months.

Re: C1 "519" block switch over date
In continuing my research on this, my understanding is 519 and 739 blocks were both used in late '58 and early '59. Evidently the foundry was running both castings for a period of time. Is this correct? Is there anyone else out there with a 519 in a late '58? TIA- Top

Re: C1 "519" block switch over date
Ted, I certainly hope that some "expert" will jump in on your post. I suspect that a 519 could certainly show up in your car's case as it was built in the final, final days of 58 production. I have to believe that if your motor were judged for a relatively early 1959 car (even though casted and date stamped prior to beginning 1959 production), this 1959 car would get full engine points assuming nothing strange showed up and it met all the "test"--whatever they are. So, to me, this same motor should be creditable for your last month of 58 build if dating and derivatives fit. I understand that 6-month date windows are accepted. Bet your window is within weeks? I guess my additional thoughts are "does any 1959 owner have a 739 block that was judged okay? Who's on first?- Top
