I did a complete restoration on my 1962 Corvette over 10 years ago, but one thing keeps bothering me...The rear deck emblem. I researched this item using Nolan Adams' book. If I am correct, although the '62 deck lid emblems were predominanty manufactured with GOLD lettering, there were some SILVER lettered emblems as well. I still have the original rear emblem that came off the car and it was thicker and SILVER lettered. My Corvette was manufactured in 1/62. I replaced the deck lid emblem with SILVER not GOLD lettering as is normally required. Even now there is still "discussion" over the color of my deck lid emblem. Did I goof or were both colors used??

Re: 1962 Deck Lid Emblem
This was an item of intense discussion in the early days of NCRS. The GM SERVICE replacements were certainly silver, even way back when.It sort of stands to reason that perhaps some later 62's might have had silver, but not much on these old cars stands to reason.- Top

Re: 1962 Deck Lid Emblem
There is no question that the original emblems were thicker and heavier than the repos or service replacement parts. The theory about color that came about back in the seventies was that the emblems were originally silver and after exposure to sunlight turned a golden color. I don't recall if that was ever proved or disproved. Rich #2276- Top

Re: 1962 Deck Lid Emblem
Actually I have may original also and it is silver on the back and front with the top edges of the outsides of the vee gold as well as the bowtie in the red flag.
And I have a original 66 gas cap insert that red flag is sun bleached to silver with a gold appearing square and theres no doubt it wasn't ever gold.- Top

Re: 1962 Deck Lid Emblem
We hit this one a month ago. The judging manual calls for a gold "vee" and lettering for chevrolet & corvette. I still have the original deck emblem for my 62, also a 1/62 car, and the areas that were gold are now a dull silver. The thought that they turn gold with exposure doesn't hold as more originals would be found this way. The gold faded with the UV exposure.
I have heard that Trim Products offers a correct colors reproduction but is in the thinner version. Eric- Top
