    Trans Casting #

Need some help in identifying the 4-speed that's currently in my '58. On an earlier thread it was indicated it might be a Muncie. Bill Belobrajdic gave me a site to help verify if it is a Corvette. It isn't. Can anyone help me identify what it is? On the driver's side - tag number is 3915077 - casting number top of the plate is 3884655 with GM. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Happy New Year to All!

    Re: Trans Casting #

Look on the opposite side of the trans from where the shift arms go. There is a number cast into the side of the case, Muncie cases were the same for all pass car and Corvette applications, so you are chasing a ghost in some ways, but here are some guides. the last three number in the casting number on the passengers side of the case will be 325 for a '64-65 application, 010 for a '66-67 application, 660 for a '68-69 application, and 661 for '70 and up. the tailhousings were changed in '65 . prior to '65 the speedo drive cabe attached on the drivers side of the tailhousing, similar to a T-10. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile changed to a tailhousing with a speedo drive on the passengers side in '65. Pontiac did not make this change and later muncies with the speedo drive on the drivers side are from a Pontiac application. There may be a VIN number stamped into the case, but pass cars usually stamped it on the top of one of the mounting ears and it is usually noyt visible in the car. That is about the only way to id for sure what a muncie was originallly installed in. It is of little relevance, since the internal parts are identical for Corvette or Passenger car applications.

Need more Casting #'s, but .....

... you might be mis-reading the casting # on the upper right corner of the side cover; probably 3884685, which is a '66 thru '68 Muncie 4-speed cover. The tag # is in the timeframe for '68 (ie. a valid '68 [maybe later] Muncie trans tag is 3915083, specified for close ratio w/3.70 or 4.11 axles).

Give us the casting # on the other side of the maincase, above the "General Motors" line [the # may be faint, and probably 3925660]. Also tail housing, same side, just back of the speedo cable fitting,; probably reads 3957584 GM.

There should be a VIN derivative and assembly date stamped on edges of the maincase, as well.

        Re: Trans Casting #

David, I suggest you email the 5-spd folks and give them the details that you have as best you can. I know that there are some real odd ball transmissions out there that just complicate identification--they know them! I really don't know how fast they will respond but I bet they do and will answer your question. Lot of Muncies out there with "mixed bag" components--kinda like T-10s.

Since I live in Northern Maine, I have stored my car for the winter. It will be spring before I can take a look at the transmission. I have copied all the great responses and will begin the Dick Tracy stuff when I bring the car out of storage in the spring. Thanks for all the informative pointers, and you most certainly will hear from me on this issue come late April or May. Again, Happy New Year to All.
