    Sun visor attachment

    Hi all,

I'm trying to fit in my newly bought sun visors to ensure safe driving when the sun is low on the horizon. I can't figure out where to mount these onto. In the archives I read that the upper molding of the windscreen should have horseshoe like reinforcements to hold the screws for the visors. How can I check if my windscreen has these (should there already be holes with thread available if so) ?

    greetings,
    Rob Musquetier.

    Rob,
Only 3,722 of the 9,670 Corvettes built in the 1959 model year have Sunshades. Sunshades were also an option in 1960 and standard for 1961 and up. My 59 #1606 was not equiped with them either and I was forced to change the upper trim as I wanted the appearance and function of sunshades. You will need to find an upper "horseshoe" piece of trim that has the sunshade holes and reinforcement plates in it. Thats the piece that came with the sunshade equiped cars. Unfortunately these are difficult to locate(translation expensive), but yours is valueble as well, especially to a 58 owner as sunshades were not available for that year. You really can't add the holes in my opinion although some people try it. Nothing is easy with these cars.

      Dave,

Thanks for responding. Can the upper trim be dismounted, drilled and fitted with cemented nuts and refitted to make it work ?

I know this is cheating for a NCRS member!

      greetings,
      Rob.

        Rob,
As I mentioned that is an option. I personally would not go that route but you could decide to try it. Others can jump in here and share their experiences.

Talk about timely! I was just about to search the archive on this very subject.
Not two hours ago I removed the visors on my '59 to install new ones. It was then I realized that the screw holes had been just drilled through the stainless
and there were no backup nuts or inserts. I checked the AIM but it doesn't show too much. Thanks Dave, that explains it. Now I have to decide what to do. It appears the old visors had been there a long time but it ain't very secure to say the least. Let me know how you do it Rob. Pat G.

            Pat,
Seeing as the piece has already been drilled you may want to make up some reinforcement and give it a try.

              Re: Sun visor attachment

I have an early 60 that, I assume, came with visors. I didn't take the car apart, but the visors were with it. I've been trying to figure out how they were mounted. There aren't any holes that match on the windshield molding. What is this "horseshoe" device? Was that how they were mounted originally?

What is the proper procedure for removing this upper trim?
I persume the first step would be removing the screws but can the trim then be taken of easely? I understood from another forum some special tooling is needed for unlocking some internal clips. Does anyone has a picture of this tool?

                thanks,

Dave is it possible to get a pic of your visors taken from a similar angle as Rob's pic? It would be nice to know where the holes should be. If you have trouble posting one here, you could email a pic directly to me. Thanks. Pat G.

                    Pat,
Unfortunately I sold the car after 11 years. Any 59-62 owner w/ sunvisors can show you via photo.

                      Larry,
The horseshoe shaped piece is the upper stainless trim. There are holes to screw it into the upper windshield frame and 4 additional holes for the sunvisors.

I have a early 60' also that didn't come with the sun visors. I am pending the process of change over. I was going to do the same and just drill holes. Changed my mind. I purchased the correct header this year with the holes and spot welded brackets for mounting. The issue is you have to disasemble the windshield so to install the new header. I will unpack the header today and forward pic's of location inside and out by email.

Rob, taking the upper windshield moulding off with the windshield all together will be difficult if not impossible. I have to replace the moulding on my '58 due to someone drilling holes for visors in it. I found a replacement and needed to have a couple of small dents removed and it polished. Just to get it off of the windshield channel piece with it completely disassembled proved to be difficult. The front edge overlaps the windshield channel and then the curve comes into play. There aren't any clips on them that I've seen. Also with the windshield assembled the windshield post ends actually fit inside the upper moulding. I may have a pic of my '60 with sunvisors that would show the positions.

My stainless trim has only 4 holes. The visors must not have been on this car.

I'm very interested in this too. Would it be possible to put the pics on here so all can see? I have a 59 that had visors under the seats. I don't know if there were ever on the car or not....... I need the pics too!!!! Thanks to all
