I know the off road mufflers (round) are used with the high horse engines. Can they also be used on a 245 hp car? Would they give a nicer sound to the car? Thanks, Joe DeLuca #37862

Yes and yes!
My '55 came with them, and that's what it has now! Sounds great! These were specified by GM on all 55-57. Some will disagree with me, but I stand with my Dad, and GM engineering. There MAY have been some old 53-54 oval stock used up when they ran short of the round ones.- Top

Re: What year?
Kevin,
The round muffler was not used on the 59 model, but is interchangeable with the oval muffler. It would not judge correct, but adds a nice exhaust note to a car.
One side note, the 230 horse car does not use a crossover pipe between the two pipes, and this addition will mellow out the sharp exhaust note on louder mufflers. You might be well advised to add the crossover pipe if you are considering the offroad mufflers.

Re: What year?
John: I have off road mufflers on my 61, I don"t have the crossover. From what you said about the sound if i understand it, by installing the crossover would it lessen the sound all togeather. or just the cracking when you let off? I like the sound when getting on it and driving, but when i let off it sounds like glass pacs. What do you think?- Top

Re: What year?
Lee,
The crossover would lessen the popping on de-acceleration and would give a more mellow note at all throttle settings, but not quieter. It allows both pipes to talk at an eight cylinder frequency pulses instead of two pipes talking at four cylinder pulses each. Iwould think that most people would prefer the sound of blance-tube dual exhaust to one that is not.- Top
