license plate restoration

Anyone have some recomendations on who does a good job restoring old plates. I want to use a set of 54 plates on my car, but the set that I have need some attention. In the past I have used a Mr. Polio in Ct.,but the latest Hemmings doesn't list him.Any thoughts would be appeciated.

I got a 1945 plate repainted by Larry ( email: tlhoeft@juno.com ) at $30. Plate was in very bad shape and it turned out PERFECT! He advertized in the NCRS magazine. Very easy to deal with. Jim

I have a 1962 NY plate that has some chipped paint.How long does it take to get them back after you send them out?

Darryls of Pa. had my 61 plate for over a year. I would highly recommend against using him. If anyone wants specifics please feel free to email me.

Curious what you guys have invested in restored plates? $30.00 seems very reasonable to restore but I wonder if all states accept them. My understanding is that some states require an examination of the tag before authorizing. Of course, the clerk would have to be an expert to be able tell the difference I suppose. I found an NOS set still in the original plastic and tissue for my car.

I bought a new unused set on Ebay but the plate is peeling and flaking off. I put some crazy glue on it to preserve the spots where it is peeling and was going to spray a clear coat on it to keep it in good condition. N.Y State only requires I picture of the plates for them to issue the REG. If you look closely at the bottom of the plate you can see where the paint is bubbling up.

Here in Massachusetts they do inspect the YOM (Year of manufacture) plates but you are right, the clerks have little or no clue as to what they are looking for. $30 is reasonable for a plate restoration. I paid $80 to Darryls.

Seeing your New York plates reminded me of the NY plate that was on my 70 Corvette when I bought it. It was ELTEONE. At first I thought it was a car owned by an Italian fellow from Brooklyn. Get it????

Here in Ca. 53 to 55 Corvette used a LARG black and yellow plate that also used a YEAR metal tag with numbers stamped in each one and they must match . The tag was held on be the right bottom screw.The tags are harder to find then the license plates

I also used Darryl`s to restore a pair of California plates. One required dent removal and minor straightening while both needed repainting. The results were great but the wait was about 5 months. It took several follow up phone calls but they were finally completed. The wait was worth it as I found several vendors who would do the paint work but none (other than Darryl`s) who would do the dent removal and straightening.

I sent my California Black plates to Darryl that were in terrible shape and they came back perfect. The down side was it took 11 months and another $25 in phone calls to get them back. VERY frustrating working with him. Could't ever get a straight answer on the phone. But once again, the plates came back perfect if you have lots of time.
