I installed a powder coated, restored oil filter cannister on my rebuilt '67 engine. (at the cost of $60) It was EXTREMELY tight goint on, but I fugured it would just scrape away the paint as it went on where it wouldn't show anyway, Well, I went to remove it to put the bellhousing inspection cover on and it wouldn't come off. It would rock side to side(with the help of a rubber hammer) but I couldn't pull down on it at all. I tried everything and finally had to ruin it to remove it. I inspected it after I got it off and found the powder coat was extremely thick around the last 1/4" or so at the top where it went into the block.

Re: BEWARE POWDER COATED OIL FILTER CANNISTERS
I'd contact the supplier, explain the problem and request a replacement or refund.
If they do replace, you can relieve the tight fit with a "once around" on a bench grinder until it installs without resistance. Spray a light coat of black paint when done and nobody will know except you.
thanks for the heads up though,

Re: BEWARE POWDER COATED OIL FILTER CANNISTERS
Good heads up on the perils of powdercoat! It goes on thicker than liquid spray finishes so masking threaded areas is key but who would have thought the surface tolerances between the block and can would be so tight. Too bad you had to ruin an original part to get it off but just thought I'd mention $60.00 is cheaper than I've seen reconditioned originals. Paragon has them 58-67 for $125.00, all new for $73.00. Both are electrostatic powder paint w/silkscreen and include the gasket and filter. I need one so I'll be sure to check it carefully and not force it on if tight.- Top

Re: BEWARE POWDER COATED OIL FILTER CANNISTERS
FYI - the paragon parts are thinner wall thickness than the original cans, about half to two thirds the GM can thickness. I am sure this is to simplify the construction.....Craig- Top

Re: BEWARE POWDER COATED OIL FILTER CANNISTERS
Clare,
The repro does have a thinner wall than originals. The bolt is also unpainted, so it should screw on easily without any powder coat problems. It really is a nice lookin unit. Once on, it looks extremely good and is one-hundred percent reliable. I.ve restored so many originals at the expense of time and money. I now run the repro and have stored all my originals.

Re: BEWARE POWDER COATED OIL FILTER CANNISTERS
Rob, Not long ago Paragon would offer a discount to NCRS members if you asked for it. This was not part of any other plan or dependant on how much you buy. I think it was 15% but I don't know if it would apply to items already on sale.
