    C1 front u-joint guard...

On my '59 there is piece of metal rivoted to the underside of the floor trans tunnel. It is about 8" long, "U" shaped and runs over the front u-joint back from the back of the shifter. My guess is it is a guard. Is this a stock GM piece or is it after market like the blowproof bellhousing on this car? Thanks. Pat G.

    Pat-------

It was added for drag racing purposes, just like the scattershield bellhousing.

It was a stock item on '56 and (I suspect) '57's as well (for "U" joint grease control. to keep it away from the body glass). Regards,

It was a safety measure incase the U-joint failed , to keep the drive shaft from going through the FIBERGLASS tunnel

I think that I erred. I thought that you were talking about a loop that went BELOW the driveshaft. As I re-read your post, I note that you are very clear about the fact that it is ABOVE the driveshaft. As others have pointed out, I believe that was an original configuration.

Now "I" know why there is one on my `62. I am pretty sure it was used at the track by an earlier owner.

All C-1's had the steel guard panel riveted to the bottom side of the tunnel; good view of it in place in the Body Shop in the center photo on page 143 of Noland's book.

                  Re: C1 front u-joint guard.&..heat shields

Talking guards I've seen many C1's with and with out HEAT shields (2) under the body (back area) above the mufflers that keep heat from the gas tank area. They were riveted to the body, any one out there in Corvette world notice this situation. Owners complaining about the heat coming from behind their head usely are missing them

Pat my 59 has never been raced or molested and it has the shield exactly as you explained it

That's it John. Good eye by the way. Thanks to all that responded. Now I have to go look for those heat shields above the mufflers. Pat G.
