oil and air filters and judging.

How important is having original oil and air filters in flight judging? I can't find any reference to oil filters in my 79 judging manual. And since AC Delco doesn't make the PF-25 anymore and i doubt if the AC 348 air filter is still available. I was just wondering how judges deal with this issue? Thanks.

    Jim,
I can't speak for the air filter but correct original PF-25 AC oil filters are available (not comercially or in reproduction) and judged for you car. You will need the blue style with the red/white/blue decal which is appriximately 2" X 3". This filter was the first change after they stopped the white PF-25's.

Deduct 40% for original equipment manufacture replacement. Deduct 60% for non-OEM replacement. I believe this holds true for both the oil & air filter.

Thanks Dave, I looked all around the Philadelphia area over the last few months and couldn't find the PF-25 oil filters, However on the way home last week I stopped at a Chevy dealer parts dept, and he had four on the shelf, so I bought all four. I'm looking at finding a AC 348 air filter now. I want to get my car flight judged and I'm desperately trying to cross all the tee's and dot all the I's and other little stuff. I've work so long and hard at this I like to do as well as possible. Thanks again !

          Jim,

It's likely you purchased the last version of the now defunct PF-25. Obviously I haven't seen the one you bought but it is most likely incorrect for your car even though its blue and has a PF-25 decal on it.

Paragon makes a nice replacement oil filter, and you can order a 348 air filter from just about any GM parts counter. The screen mesh is however, not correct.

So, all and all, you can search high and low for correct NOS filters or you can use the above and revert back to Bob Beck's comment. Happy Hunting.

              Gregg,

I was not aware that Paragon(or any other vendor) sold a blue reproduction PF-25. Could you comment on the quality and accuracy of them????

                I don't think they do.

But I think I know how.

Yes indeed it is the blue canister with the small 'Duraguard' red, white and blue label. It was the closest I thought I could get in todays marketplace. I'll have to see about getting a Paragon catalog to see about their oil filter. Thank you.

                    Jim,

The filter you have is a more recent AC service replacement but will not get full points on the judging field. I think your only option for full points is to find the correct period (1976 to 1983) PF-25. The label I refer to has a blue backround and is larger in size than the more recent PF-25's. Refer to the Restorer article from about a year ago on PF-25's.
