C2 starter

I've got a 66 big block (390 hp), starter is not doing so good. Where would be the best place to get a good replacement. "matching numbers" not a consideration.

There are many places and some probably local to you that rebuild starters. If you have an original or not you might have yours rebuilt or do an exchange for one that is already been rebuilt. Most will offer some kind of limited warranty. If yours can't be rebuilt you will have to pay an additional core charge.

First, I'd check to see if you have an original starter. If you do, then I'd either have it rebuilt or, at least, save it. If it's non-original, then it's only value is as a core. An original starter for your car should be stamped 1107365 on the frame.

As mentioned, John Pirkle is an excellent source for starter rebuilds. John does BOTH NCRS/NCCB-correct restorations as well as plain old high quality rebuilds. If your starter is original, he can rebuild it for you any way you want.

If the starter is not original (or, if it is but you just want to save it and get another starter on the car), I'd check with your AC/Delco dealer for a Delco-remanufactured starter. The one that you need is GM #1876552.

Thank you all. Joe, It is the original. I intended to get another and save the original for the kids in case they ever want to restore car when they pry me out of it. Does this sound like overkill (the saving and getting an alternate-not the prying dad out part).

Steve - not overkill at all, you can't imagine how many of us would have been thrilled to have the original parts to rebuild. The core charge is minimal when you pick up a service replacement, I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER turn in my originals to a rebuilder......Craig

Thanks Craig. I just made the mistake of leaving my original shocks and srings over at my buddies house after we replaced suspension and his significant other thought they looked worn out (they did) and tossed them. I knew I should have just brought them home.

Knowing you have the original I would have it rebuilt but only using a source you can trust to get yours back. I would suggest finding a local shop that does these in house instead of sending them out. As others have said, you are fortunate to have the original so be careful.

Steve since you may the original starter, there is a starter for the 502 big block in Chevrolets high performance catalog that might be usable. It is a more modern looking starter than our older ones. Part #9000852 and has the staggered bolt up pattern. Wonder is this new starter would be better than the old style for hot starts?

John Pirkle will rebuild yours and not break the bank. He will also do a high torque starter that, if you run out of gas, will crank your car to the next gas station

Funny you should say that, I got a little optomistic this AM with fuel and distance equation and was seriously sweating the load before I hit the one gas station on the way to work.
