    Useta Didn't Know JACK

    Hi Everyone,

All "Tech-talk" aside, I just wanted to post an "observation" or two. Even though we're staring at each other through these CRT computer screens, it seems there's a welcome place for everyone here at the DNB that wants to join in.

My experience is a "thimball full" compared to most here, and I appreciate the room I get for joining in an answer to a question or two. I enjoy reading "just one of me" like CHESTER when he posts-in with his 10 or 20 questions at a time. I'm more glad (gladder?) that we're doing more "discussin" rather than making this into an "Ask The Expert".

Just by going from the "Top 25" at the Archives, I (we?) may have overlooked thanking Jack Humphrey from time to time. It show's that he's the only one of us here that even compares, and either his or Joe's postings can put most of the rest of us to shame. I've noticed one or two questions slipping through the cracks the last couple days that I think either one of them coulda/woulda answered. But to wrap-up, I also think that it's all our participation here that really counts, and not to try to limit ourselves to just the experts we enjoy and have come to rely on. And also, thanks to you too, Jack. Best wishes. Tom #24014

    Thanks, Tom

Appreciate the pat on back. I'm not always right, but I try....

Haven't been real active due to work and car. Was getting plugs carboned on 'Lil Red (short 1.5 mile drive to work at 7930 ft). Pulled and cleaned by hand. Put pedal to the floor after and 'boom' blew out a cloud of black as secondaries opened. Have 213 Q-Jet primaries set one down for altitude compensation, but decided I need to be a touch more agressive now and then....

Yesterday, I went to open 'er up and roar, screech, bam, thuggle, slap, slap, riippp. Pulled over immediately and popped the 'bonnet' as our UK brothers say. (*&^darn 'correct/repro' cloth wrapped alt belt bought the farm (second time).

When she went (innermost belt on SB A/C P/S setup) she twisted both A/C and P/S belts and slapped the orig rubber oil cap into oblivion. Hey! I'm ahead of the game. Things like this usually happen on caravan to National Convention or just before/during Operations check. Funny how this 'waits' to bite you at just the worst time.

So, try another repro belt? Put on Mr. Goodwrench service spare for 1/2 credit? Slap on home town belt (Gates Rubber) for no credit and $ savings?

After trying two nearby Chevy/GMC dealers and giving original P/N plus dimensions of belt and hearing the familiar, "Da, des part numbers ain't no good no moe" (makes me want to scream -- just because it isn't in the computer doesn't mean GM burned the (*&^ing drawings and recalled all the parts that were ever made -- WAKE UP CHEVY, Mr. Goodwrench says keep your GM car all GM and when you try you're run out of town on a rail, hey I've actually carried in a full D-sized GM drawing to hear the 'no good' nonsense, what the heck's this thing I'm holding!!!!) I gave up and bought a Gates belt.

Oh, parts men around the nation, because it isn't in your stock doesn't mean you can't use locator! If it's not on the computer, there were microfisch records. And, horror of horrors, it used to be GMPD before Service Operations and they actually gave out BOOKS (gasp, open and read?)....

        Parts?

I'm sure you're a long way from turning it into a "parts car" but if you're interested I know of a guy that's looking for a rare differential for his 91 Chevy Blazer S-10. (Just joking). Tom #24014

            Belts, They Go a-Flippin'

            Jack,

I did the same with my 1971 SB repro belts, twice with the same set. The first time I had no indication that they went, and the car overheated, spraying hot coolant over my freshly restored engine and compartment. The engine orange still has streaks of discoloration from this episode. I asked the vendor if he made the belts so accurate that they flipped off just as quickly as the originals did, but he swears that he had never heard of this happening before.

I went to the Goodyear "Gatorback" design of belt, and these things grip GREAT! Put the repros on for the shows if you want, but even belt design has improved in the last 30 years.

            Take Care,
