    Ughh - Insurance

I've gone through a myriad of threads on insurance. But, I can't find any that mention a carrier that does not require the vehicle to be garaged (unattended) overnight 100% of the time. I'm trying to locate a "collector car" insurance carrier that will allow the car to be outside overnight (unattended) on an occasion as I'd like to participate in some cruises that go out of town.

    Any pointers?

I use State Farm. They are flexible ..but the premium is a little more.

I use Haggerty Insurance and have never had any problem. Nothing ever mentioned about having to be garaged 100% of the time. Rates are fairly cheap for stated amount coverage and they only charge liability for one vehicle regardless of how many you have insured with them. Good company.

Better check with Hagerty, Grundy, and the rest, I called them a month ago and was told if car is UNattended, NO insurance for theft etc. This started me calling around and the only classic car insurance company I found that does not have an unattended clause in their policy is Sneed. Their premiums will be higher then Hagerty or Grundy, but you will be able to park your car and go into a mall and know that you are covered. This is NOT the case with most classic car insurers. Don't take my word for it, call your insurance company and ask them if you park your car in a store lot and something happens to it if it is covered.

            Hagerty

When I signed up with Hagerty I specificly asked about cases of driving the car to car shows and it having to be out overnight. Specificly driving from Central Texas to the Bloomington Gold show which would require one night on the road each way and then 4 or 5 nights at the show with the car unattended in a motel parking lot. They advised me that this was not a problem. Assume it is because I was going to a car show. But if I took it on a general cross country trip, then it may be a problem but I never explored that with them.

              Hagerty FAQ:
              Q. What are Hagerty's garage requirements?
              A. Vehicles must be stored in a locked garage when not in use.

"Vehicles insured on our program must be used on a limited basis consistent with the operation of something valuable, such as club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours, and limited pleasure driving."

The Chevrolet Corvette (1966-1982) was named the number one stolen collector vehicle in a recent study conducted by the Hagerty Protection Network (HPN) between July 1999 through December 2002.

              GRUNDY FAQ :
              4) Is my car covered while parked outside or left unattended?
Underwriters will want to know that you take extraordinary care of your collector car and will require that you have a garage for it when it is not in use. However, leaving a car unattended or in the driveway overnight is not the basis for denying a claim. Insurance Companies and their policies are carefully regulated by (50) separate state Insurance Departments to protect you from unclear, hidden, or fine print exclusions.

              SNEED FAQ :
Q: Are there other restrictions on where and when insured vehicles can be driven?
A: Sneed encourages collectors to enjoy their cars, whether its taking them for a Sunday driver or participating in a car show. However, Sneed does not insure vehicles used for daily transportation or racing.
-> This statement only refers to "driving" and does not mention anything about when the vehicle is stopped e.g. parking/storage. I have an e-mail in to them and will report the results.

Based on several friends' experience, I've learned to never trust a verbal response at the other end of a phone--even the IRS does not stand behind the answers given over the phone. Unless the company is willing to put it in writing, I'm concerned that "unattended" could be used to deny a claim for Hagerty or Grundy.

              I'm still searching...

I have a 1960 insured with American Family. Have full coverage, liability, collsion, comprehensive, etc. Never any mention of having to garage or attend vehicle at all times. I just went to local insurance office/appraisal center, had car appraised. I also confirmed this with my Anmerican Family agent (whom I've been with for 40 years)car is insured same as any other car I own. Is there something I'm missing that I should be asking my insurance agent?

I have my other two cars insured with USAA which has an arangement with American. Is this the same company?
                  https://www.gc.usaa.com/inet/gas_corp/CpContactUs?ContactUsPageId=PCClassicCarsContactUs

Is so, they have few of restrictions such as:
                  At least 15 years old
Garaged when it is not in use
Driven less than 2,500 miles a year
Never left unattended in a parking lot
                  Worth at least $3,000

I'm not an insurance expert, but I seem to buy a lot: life, health, dental, long-term care, car, motorcycle, and now the vette.

                    Lenn,

American Family Insurance is not affiliated with USAA to my knowledge. They are located in Madison, Wisc and have been in business since 1927. They are located in 17 states across the US. I live in Minnesota and they are big here, on a par with State Farm Insurance. Been Insured with them for many years, also have my home insurance with them, also at one time motorcycle insurance. According to my insurance agent there no restrictions on my Corvette insurance.

                      Lenn,

My primary insurance for everything is also USAA. I have a "rider" with American and have the same restrictions you list on my 1963 Z06. I believe "our" company is out of Cherry Hill, NJ and is really a part of a banking institution that is heardquartered out of Florida? I don't have my policy in front of me as I am yakking from work - but can certainly repost this evening from home if anyone is interested.

Dale, I'm not sure if you're missing anything, since you mentioned that you had the car appraised. The question you need to ask the agent is "How much $$$ would I receive if the car was stolen or totalled?". Get this answer in writing. If the answer is that you will receive the appraised value of the car, then you're OK. If the answer is something vague like "book value" then you need to get more details on the exact nature of your coverage.

Hagerty, Sneed, and the other classic car insurers will write an "agreed value" policy where you and the company agree to the value of the car. If the car is stolen or totalled, that is the value you will receive. Most standard auto policies do not pay out in this manner.

                        Shannon

                          Lenn,

Our "underwriter" for USAA is American Collector's Insurance (Cherry Hill, NJ) which is owned by American Family (Florida)! The following link contains all the info on "our" policy:

Dale, Shannon is correct. It sounds like you have a garden variety auto policy. My first clue was when you wrote that your agent said the Vette would be insured "just like my other vehicles", that is, "book value" or"cash value". This is not good. They will depreciate the Vette and you'll be left holding the bag. Best check with your agent. You pretty much can't go wrong with the established companies like Haggerty, JC Taylor, et al.
