C2 Instrument Panel Removal

I'm planning to remove the instrument panel from my 64 and have the gauges restored. I understand that a tool is required to remove the ignition switch and the light switch. Where can I get this or these tools? I don't see anything in Paragon, Mid-America, or Corvette Central catalogs.

1. You can do it without the special tool, but you might marr the retaining rings with the needle-nose pliers you would use. Also know that you need to take out the lock cylinder BEFORE taking that retaining ring off - use a straightened paperclip or similar.

2. I think the places you mentioned should carry it, but I do know for sure that Long Island Corvette DOES sell the tool - I bought mine from them.

ps - removal and reinstall of the gauge cluster was frustrating for me, mostly due to the wiring harness - bulbs. Some will suggest some long threaded bolts matching the retaining screws, to support the cluster while you re-wire the connectors and bulbs. That seems to help.

I just restored my dash cluster and didn't need any special tools. The pull knob on the light switch comes out when you depress the spring loaded lock pin on the outside of the switch. Then using a screw driver, unscrew the big nut which holds the switch in.

Same for the ignition switch, use a flat screw driver and gently tap counterclockwise the outside nut holding the switch in. Then insert a paper clip into the small hole of the switch with the key in it (in the 'off' position), turn counterclockwise, until you feel the lock mechanism start to snap out of the switch. It's all detailed in the Shop Manual. PT

Correction...

On the ignition switch, use the end of the paper clip and push into hole until you can feel the spring loaded release latch push in and then turn the entire tumbler to the left with the key to pull it out. Do this FIRST, then use a flat blade screwdriver and unscrew the big outside SS nut. It won't work vice versa.

Use masking tape to label all those wires. Then draw pictures showing which wire goes where. Make notes on wire colors and usages. Don't forget the oil line going to the guage.
This can be a stumbling point. I have never been able to get mine loose. I finally had to cut (ouch) and splice the line. Even after I got it on the workbench the little bugger still would not unscrew!
Do be sure to disconnect the battery before you see the sparks.
Take the seat out first. Then drop the steering column.
This activity is actually a "Rite of Passage" for the C2 Corvette Faithful. This and replacing a clutch with the engine in the car are two of your finer challenges.

Last....

during reassembly don't make the common mistake and forget to install BLINKER element lamps in the headlight and brake warning sockets! This is very common and typically generates an 'Awshucks' when you have to go back and swap those bulbs for full credit during Operations Checks....
