    Amp Gauge gone wacko?

Recently after not having driven my car for a few weeks, I got in and started the beast up and noticed that the amp gauge needle initially jumped up then dropped completely down to -40. Since then it barely moves when I run the car, staying at -40. I had the alternator tested and it shows to be putting out 13-14 volts. Do I need to have the amperage output also tested? The guy at the parts shop did not offer that test. Any help is appreciated.

If it does not return to center "0" with the key off, you need a new amp gauge. Before you install the new gauge, have the electrical system checked for a short in the sending wire that activates the ammeter. You did not mention the year, but in the '63 up cars the ammeter is actually a sensitive voltmeter that infers amperage by measuring voltage drop thru the main electrical feed wire in the engine compartment.
