Addendum
Jim-----
One more thing: if the car is equipped with cruise control, then I think that the "early" versus "late" 79 configuration can be discerened by the presence or absence of the 80-82 style cornering lamps. I think that "early" cars don't have them and later ones do.
The parts for either the early or late are still available. Here they are:
early w/cruise:
lever (30 degree bend style)-----GM #25030522
switch---------------------------GM #1997988
late w/cruise:
lever (straight)------------------GM #25030492
switch----------------------------GM #1997984
ALL without cruise:
lever-----------------------------GM #475877In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 2nd Addendum
Jim,Joe
I also have a 79, I was under the impression that the 2-nd design (bent/long) was for Tilt/Telescopic Option. Since my car has this option I do have the long/bent leaver. I do know it makes a difference when turning you can reach the leaver easly with your finger tips if the stearing wheel is out towards you. Joe what are you talking about concerning turning/marker lamps? I have never seen a 79 with these. My car is a August build.
Best regards to all.

Re: 2nd Addendum
John-----
The "30 degree bend" lever was the "early" design; the straight was the later design. These apply to 79s with Tilt-Tele AND Cruise Control. All 1979s with Tilt-Tele but WITHOUT cruise control used a straight lever of GM #14009242. 1979s WITHOUT EITHER cruise control OR tilt-tele used a straight lever of GM #475877.
I don't know what the cornering lamp configuration was like for 1979 or when and/or how many were manufactured. I assume that the configuration was similar to the 80-82 style. Supposedly, the "straight" lever 79s WITH CRUISE CONTROL also had the cornering lamps. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 2nd Addendum
Joe, John and Jim-
To add to the mystery/confusion: My early build (4xxx) 1979 has tilt/tele, no cruise(M21) and no cornering lights but does have the 30 degree bend lever-which has been slightly loose for about 20 years. As a backup I purchased a "1st design" switch that was also defined by the ebay seller as "no cornering lights". My recollection is that it is AC/Delco #6222 and it is also discontinued. I will check tonight and re-post if I'm incorrect. The part # did agree with other sources so my ebay skepticism was reduced.

Re: 2nd Addendum-correction
My switch is Delco Remy and is NOS. The attached GM shipping label shows a part # of 1997983 Group 2.895. Delco Remy # is 1-D6222. My notes say it is OEM replacement for 1977,78 and 1st design 79 without cornering lights. This is hand written on the box as well in obviously old marking pen. Also in my notes is that AC/Delco # D6225 can be made to work with some modification. This part # is currently listed on Advance Auto Parts' website for $33.88. The listing says"..or D6222" but then says WITHOUT tilt/tele?? The picture of it is low detail but I couldn't see any obvious differences from mine.

Re: 2nd Addendum-correction
Still confusing isn't it. I've been unable to find any oem parts so am looking for aftermarket. Several restoration companies offer them but all are unclear on how to determine which lever and switch is needed.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
