    The clips provide redundant ground paths for the ignition (RFI) shielding.

      Bruce,

      John H has a post in this thread on the function of the grounding clip. If yours is only about an inch long, it's likely that the upper or lower part of the clip has been broken off.

      From around serial 3500 in 63, the section above the rivets is more or less in the shape of a "U" with the legs perpendicular to the surface of the shielding. There are serrated teeth along the edge to "bite" the perimeter of the air cleaner or FI unit for a ground path.

      There are some engineering drawings depicting the clip (and the earlier version) in Nolan Adams book on pg 167.

      Mine was broke above the rivets prompting my purchase of this kit. I wasn't really happy with the quality of the "teeth" on the repop clip, but it will do.
