How many early 56 had painted headlight doors?

Roy, I seem to remember a statement in Noland's restoration guide that the painted doors were visible on publicity shots, but were never installed on delivered Corvettes. I think some of the publicity shots with lots of 56s in them even had the painted door cars. There is at least a chance that I dreamed all this - but I think that all delivered cars had chrome headlight doors. Steve -

JG sez 56's up to serial #1360 (360th car built) have painted (over chrome) bezels, #1360-#1600 had either painted or chrome in matched sets, and from #1600-up were all chrome.Comment

Roy, Just as an added bit of info, my 56 is E56S003190 - definitely with chrome headlight doors. But when we painted it the original Aztec Copper, I installed the old doors, which had been prepped and primered, and shot the old doors to match the car. I like the look of painted doors and will just swap the doors out for the chrome ones prior to any judging. SteveComment

I have both for my red '56. Switching them changes the whole look of the front of the car!! My '56 is a very late one so I know that there is no chance of it coming out of the factory that way. It sure does look different, though.Comment
