Does anyone get into the Delco Remy numbers to the point of explaining the "nose numbers"? Who has a full list of the numbers for other GM applications? On the 'net? THANKS

Thanks Bill - Starter number 1107320 dated 4E1 has what I called a "nose" (the thing that fits into the flywheel area and holds the cranking gear) with some numbers on it. One number "J17" looks like it was typed on a rectangular metal strip and inserted in the casting mold for this part. (I've seen dates on alum. intakes which are on similar rectangles). Also, a number 3954 with 1 and 2 below it, are also cast in this part. All these numbers are visible only if the starter is out of an engine.
Could be a rebuild brought this part into the mix.
My main concern is to find applications for the various other starters I have stashed inside a metal desk...In a space was designed to store a typewriter on a spring loaded shelf! Thanks again. /td

The J17 on the strip you describe is typical of a casting date on a cast iron part. The Cast Iron nose was used on most of the BB starters in the C-2 era. I'll look in my Delco lit and see if the other numbers show up anywhee on the parts lists for the BB starters and let you know.Bill Clupper #618- Top

I checked a couple of Chevy parts books, and nothing matches the 3954 number, and the DR book is dedicated to detailed breakdowns of Generators & alternators, not Starter motore (my mistake) so it looks like I'm at a dead end.Bill Clupper #618- Top
