    Engine purchase

    Hi all,

I'm currently in the engine buying phase. The seller has send the following pictures. Are these (stamped) numbers looking original or restamped ?

(see also next posting for second picture)

    thanks,
    Rob.

519 casting # looks good but scrape the chevy orange away and make sure there is no JB Weld, Devcon etc that has been used in the past to "creat" needed casting #'s. mike

          Mike,
Just aligning a piece of paper across the screen the casting numbers do not align up (they go up and down) and appear different sizes........what do you think?

Just a comment on the statement that the casting numbers do not line up. As a retired professional photographer of 40 years I can tell you that the photo was taken on an angle from the right side and not straight on. The numbers closest to the lens, right side, will appear larger, with diminishing perspective.

Rob, Is this engine in the States? Where is the location? Perhaps you can find a knowledgable NCRS member or someone else nearby to check it out for you.

                    Re: Use a weak magnet

I have been following his web site; he is also a Corvette forum member. The guy lives in the Dutch Netherlands and is probably buying an engine that is in the USA, the pictures were taken by the seller. I suggest that if he gives the location of the engine here and on the Corvette forum maybe someone from this site or another forum an look at it in person and give him a report.

Notice the 519 are lower than the rest of the numbers as aligned with a piece of paper on the screen. The sugestion to use a weak magnet is very good to check for epoxy numbers.

loren the weak magnet will not work

if they mixed iron filings with the epoxy. just chip at it with a screwdriver.

Loren, I was taught to use the filings with the expoxy. Will actually give a little grain and is magnetic. Maybe you need to take a refresher course in Lowbuck TX.
