C1 HEATER RESTORATION

I am starting to restore the heater in my 1961. I am looking for a good replacement heater core. Anyone know of a good source. Should I do anything to the blower motor? I think it did work, I am not sure how well. Is it wise to replace the heater control calve? I did not check how the heater was working before I started my restoration. One of my many mistakes. Any other things you can think of that I should do is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe DeLuca #37862

I'm in the middle of restoring my heaterbox (see site) and decided when I'm going to do this I replace all the bit except the motor (since its easy accessable and won't cause any spilling of coolant fluids when it's working properly). So I'm replacing: core, gaskets and the valve. Also I decided to replace the studs (with the special locking thingies).

I've ordered a heater core from CorvetteStop.com but I haven't received it yet so I can't give you an evaluation of this product...

Joe: the local radiator shop here in town buys heater cores in long blocks of varying widths. they measured the core in my 61 then cut a piece off their block then resoldered the end tanks on the neew core.. I got the valve woking by purchasing a 57 pass car valve from Dancheck and used parts off the pass car valve to rebuild my 61 valve. pass valve is similar but not identical to the vet valve.good lkuck, mike

Easy enough to check your heater motor out of the car, just hook it up to a battery charger, positive clamp to the electrical terminal on the fan motor and the ground clamp to the motor frame and turn it on.

Be carefull testing this way, the battery charge will deliver a higher voltage (> 12v sometimes up to 15v) and the motor (or other tested device) can permanently get damaged this way.

Some battery chargers will deliver a fixed current and adjust their voltage to this current. The output voltage can sometimes get up to 24v.

Better hook it to your battery or a 12v power supply.

Add a drop of oil to the bird cage bearings before assembly. (nothing like a squeel after intsalling)

Joe, you really need to restore the existing motor if it is not working properly. When I restored my heater I tried to order a new motor just to be cautious and found that the replacements out there don't have the right bolt pattern to even fit into the heater housing and the wiring doesn't exit the motors in the right place. All I could find is just generic utility electric motors. The good news is that IF you have the type of motor that has bolts and not riveted shafts, they come apart really easily and can be easily rebuilt.
