    Wiper door problem (1970)

I have just finished a complete overhaul of the vacuum-system of the wiper door. But after engine-start (approx. 5 seconds after) the wiper door opens and closes again. Is this usual or a known problem? Is there a timing problem between control-vacuum and main-vacuum?

I had the same problem on my 71. Mine would also open up 60 sec after car was shut off. You have a leak some were in your vacumm controll circuit. The main storage system is building vacuum faster than the control system the your door opens thus equelizing vacuum, and the controll system tells door too close again. Same thing happens when you shut down engine. The controll circuit leaks down faster than supply circuit. My leak was found in the wiper arm switch. If you can supply a remote vacuum sorce to your car you may be able to hear leak. Good Luck ED

Yes, on engine start-up, 'dancing' wiper door and 'winking' headlights are classic symptoms of vac system imbalance. You'll find a number of threads in the archieves on this. Bascially, you start by understanding the vac system (a number of catalog houses, including Dr. Rebuild, sell troubleshooting phamphlets which teach/explain). The biggest cause(s) of such problems (do NOT expect there's only ONE problem) are:

      (1) Leak(s) resulting in slow vac build-up causing the servo side of the vac (branchs that actually move/operate devices) to win the race before the control side of the vac system (lines that tell/instruct the servo devices when to open/close this/that) come into equilibrium.

      (2) Defective check valve that lets stored vac bleed out of the storage cannister.

      (3) Clogged in-line vac filter that's slowing the overall system's vac build-up.

Typically, there's more than one problem to find/kill....

Jack, the wiper door setup is living proff that "Rube Goldberg" lived at least until the late '60's when this system was designed. I think that he passed on or left the country after that one

Yup, and he retired to a country that doesn't have an extradition treaty with us; nine vacuum system redesigns in thirteen years should tell you something

              "Believe It or Don't..."

Rube Goldberg was a real guy, and you're right, Dick, his death was just a few years before the Corvette "wiper door" disappeared forever.

However, unless he was secretly consulting with the General, he didn't have anything to do with the door designs...it appears that his greatest success was getting his name added to the vernacular. Ain't the internet great??!!...if you can type it, you can know it!

BTW, the shouted phrase "Hey Rube" is an unrelated karny cry for help in a rumble with locals, but that's another story for another question.
