    C2 label glue?

    Hi all,

I am looking to replace the carpet in my '66 in the near future and found that the rear storage cover (jack board) looks to be out of a '67. Makes sense, a prior owner that I have spoken with had a '67 with the same color interior and probably switched them out. Anyway, when I go to replace the carpet, I thought I would replace the labels. Getting the labels is easy, but I couldn't find anything in the archives about what kind of glue was used? Does anyone know the proceedure for affixing the labels correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Rob

    Hi Rob!

"Getting the labels is easy..."?? Assuming you are talking about the jacking instructions and Posi label, check very carefully with whatever is left of your originals. What I'm finding for sale are "contact paper" labels. Maybe things changed over the years, but my '63 has thin regular paper labels that are held to the board by some sort of hand-applied glue (Elmer's??). Then another coat of glue or shellac is slathered around the perimeter of the label to seal the edges - no contact paper labels here!

One more thing - I have a late '63 (August). My original jacking instruction label has numerous differences from the "correct label" right down to a revision date of 10-1-62 that is not on the new one. I have asked M.F. Dobbins about this a few months back and was told: "When GM accept our labels, prior to our being licensed to sell them, GM wanted the reproduction labels/stickers to be distinguished from the originals ... hence, there are differences."

I am now on a mission to scan the new label, edit the image to reflect my original label changes, print it out on real paper, and apply it to the board with glue / shellac.

Even the labels can be a fight if you want it right! Good luck!

Now that you've got me started on this, I remembered seeing a reference to this glue in the '63 AIM. And I found it again under the posi option in the back. We have to assume that the jacking instructions and the posi labels are attached using the same method. Section G81 Sheet 1.00 says that item 4 is 3686625 CEMENT. So there's your answer. A little water, a little fine sand, and a bag of cement! 8>O Seriously someone might know a present day equivalent for this. No word on the shellac around the edges though.

-----Get a tube of 3M yellow weatherstrip adhesive. Squeeze out a bit of it and try to thin it out with lacquer thinner. Then brush it on both the back of the label and the area you want to apply it with a cheap solder brush. Dont be neat. The factory certainly wasnt. That should do it!........Bill S

          Re: C2 label glue?

          Pete,

Thanks for the reply. The reproduction labels that I have purchased are thin paper (not "contact paper"). The only difference that I can see on the jacking instructions is that the reproduction doesn't have a date next to the part no. everything else seems to be the same. I don't see any differences in the posi labels. Granted, I'm not using anything other than my eye to compare them.

It looks like Bill has a suggestion for an application process that I'll have to check out.

          Thanks again for the reply,
          Rob

            Re: C2 label glue?

We used (DAP)contact cement that I got at the hardware store in a quart can with a brush to glue down the carpet as well as the label even though it was a contact sheet on the new board I made on friends 66 coupe.
The glues looked similar (old and new) after drying.

But best stuff I've ever used and just happens to be" yellow" is called
"3M trim and top adhesive" but don't have a present source to purchase a quart from, Previously I got it from a vinyl top company who repackaged it into quart cans with generic white labels from its only available in
            5 gallon quantity from 3M.

If you find a supplier let me know!
