    Halfshaft French Locks

I have checked most of the suppliers catalogs, I see there are TWO types of Half Shaft Flange French Locks you can order. One is for 63 and 64's, the other are for 65-67's. I mentioned that the ones I have from Long Island are for 63/64's and bend when trying to install. The catalogs show ONE picture of a much hevier looking Lock...however no specifies if the picture is for the 63's or '65's/ The Paragon book shows a good picutre of a beefier Lock...there discription is yet different; '64 - 79's. Does anyone know if the '63 is for some reasn a lighter design (subject to twisting during installation?, and the heavier looking Locks are a improved design for '64 cars and up? I've gone through all my books (I've got lots!) and can't find any information. There is no sence inordering the heaver looking Locks if they are in fact wrong for my '63.Thanks, AC

Yes, there are two, listed in '65 parts book as follows: 3843385 (flat Bridge) 63-64 first design 3860543 (round Bridge) 64-65 second design.

the '543 was used well past '65, at least into the C-3 series cars

I had some old NOS locks in my inventory, along with some repro's I got from Corvette Central. They look identical. The center rib provides reinforcement so they did not twist when I installed them.

I just ordered a set from my local Chevy dealer. When they get in on Tuesday, I will let you know how they look compared to the original ones. BTW, .94$ each, comes in a pack of five.

Don't worry to much about the early style getting a little twisted. I've removed plenty of original ones that did not lay very flat. It seems the factory had similar problems. It's my opinion that the little twisting on a new installation gives it character! If ya are not showing, the newer style Bill talked about are better suited to staying flat, but would not be correct for your 63. All these locks were bare steel originally, but many suppliers sell them with a lite plating for some rust protection.

My assembly manuals confirm this. In addition, the 3843385 lock was used starting on 4-16-63 AIM date till 12-27-63 AIM date. The 3860543 lock was used from 12-27-63 AIM date.

As you are aware, the AIM dates were only an approximation of when the part actually went into service.

In addition, this part was Corvette only & not used in any other vehicle during the 63-67 time frame.
