Agreed that the W block 348 and "legendary" 409 were basically boat anchors. Same goes for the Ford 352/390 mills.

I always thought that the '60 was a pretty car. I wasn't too crazy about the styling of the front end, though. The roofline was striking, especially after the boxy '59 and '59 models.

You are right about the Mercomatic/Fordomatics. They were 3 speed units, BUT they were offered as 2 speeds from '59-'64.

So true! My "frugal" uncle was riding around with a '49 Chevy DeLuxe black four door sedan, until about 1960.

A funny story from the early sixties. My next door neighbor, who was LOADED, but walked around with holes in his shoes, shirt and pants, owned an identical pair of red/white top '51 Chevrolet Deluxe Station Wagons, in varying states of disrepair. Each car would alternate as a driver and/or parts donor car. I remember sitting on my front porch one summer evening, when there goes Nick and his wagon down the street. He hits a pothole, and off flys the lift gate. One of the chains on the gate manages to hang on, and he's dragging the thing down the street, sparks flying. That was the damned funniest thing .........laughed my head off.
