    1968 SB Vacuum Ques.'s

    The saga continues -

    Couple questions:

    1. Is it OK to put a splitter on the vacuum source fitting at the manifold to provide vacuum for both my power brake booster and my vacuum reservoir tank? I only have one outlet there out of the manifold, and did not think that the vacuum sources from the carb (there are 2 on the carb, front and back)would be OK to use for this. The front carb vac source is used for my PCV, and the one in the back of the carb has a smaller outlet hole.

    2. From the manual overide switch under the dash, is there another routing block or connection that has to be made to fittings located up by the back of the tach? It seems that there's some kind of connector there on my car.

    Cars with power brakes had a fitting on the intake manifold that had 2 nipples on it---one for the accessory vacuum source and one for the power brakes. Dr. Rebuild carries all configurations of the fittings.

    The device on the back of the tach is the electro-mechanical solenoid valve for the w/w door. I don't recall, though, if there are connections from the over-ride switch to this valve. I don't seem to recall any.

      Richard, check your AIM in the options section at the back. You should have sheets for J50 Vacuum Power Brakes. There should be one sheet that shows the different types of manifold vacuum fittings used on the different engine options.

      In 70, one tap on the fitting had a tapered nose with threads for a flare fitting to a steel line that transitioned to a rubber hose to the PB booster. Depending on the options on the car, there can be several slip tube connections of this single large (1/2" NPT) fitting, one of which supplies the vacuum system. No problem with feeding the brakes and vacuum system off the same fitting; that's the way the factory did it.
