    '54 Exhaust extensions

Our '54 has straight chrome pipe exhaust extensions. They look like regular parts store extensions. Would like to have the correct '54 extensions designed by Duntov to reduce exhaust fumes in the interior. These, as I understand it, direct the exhaust gases down using some kind of baffle, but the ends look like straight pipes. However, the ones I've seen in catalogs are $500. They also don't have a picture, and I've never seen them up close.

So the question is: Does someone have descriptions, dimensions, or drawings of these things that I could use to procure a functional equivalent? I've considered just getting some downturned extensions, but am not sure how long they would need to be to get into the right part of the airstream.

So this message won't be off-topic: I swear my goal is to get the correct parts, and this is only a temporary measure :^).

Wayne, if you search the old "Restorer" articles from the search engine on this site, I believe there was some info similar to what you are looking for about 20 years ago in a "Restorer" article. Run the search & see if you can find it.

        Re: '54 Exhaust extensions

Hello Wayne; 53's and early 54's (will have to check my books to see how far into 54) do use a short, straight extension. Later 54's and all 55's use the longer, baffled model. The short extensions stick out of the body about 1 to 2 inches, while the longer ones protrude 5 inches or so. The longer extensions have a cut out on the bottom, and a baffle welded inside. The baffle directs the exhaust gas downward. This also prevents the water laden exhaust spray from soiling/discoloring your paint. Your straight extensions could be correct for your car, depending on the SN. Chuck Gongloff

SN is E54S003435, I think that lets it out of being an early '54.

Thanks for the pointer, Bill. Unfortunately, search on the "exhaust system" category for both '54 and '55 cars yielded only something about 53-62 pollution control systems (road draft tubes perhaps?) and another on concours exhaust manifold preparation.
