I hear and feel a small a thump when I turn my wheel a half turn to the right and left. It seems to be coming from the steering column. Are there bearings in the upper steering column ? Thats what it sounds like to me. I know its not my PS components, they are new. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: 64/PS
George, there are bearings in both the upper and lower section of the column housing. They are loaded by pressure between a spring at the top which is in a location fixed by the base of the steering wheel, and a lower spring that is loaded via an adjustable clamp on the steering shaft just below the end of the column. Failure of the lower bearing is very common, I'd look there first.- Top

Re: 64/PS "thumps"
George -- Sometimes what feels as though it's in the steering column is actually being transmitted from the steering linkage (relay rod, PS cylinder, etc.) Has this "thump" begun only since the new PS (re)install ? Have someone at floor level observe the linkage movement while you turn the wheel back and forth. If this is a new installation on a previously non-PS car, watch for linkage interference on a big (hi-horse) oil pan, or the tie rods not installed in the forward (quick steering) position of the steering knuckle, or a non-PS pitman arm.- Top
