    correct ACDelco speedometer/odometer lube?

I tried to get an answer from guage repair vendors, but couldn't

What is the correct ACDelco speedometer/odometer lubricant for a 1966 assembly.
If it is no longer available, what is in common usage?
Is there a special solvent to clean off the old lubricant?

I bought an original speedometer that has not been used in 25 years, and I would like to clean off the gummy old lubricant and put the speedometer in service in my 66. After that I may try to repair the odometer drive on the original assembly.

i'd clean it with laquer thinner being caeful not to get thinner on the face. then SPARINGLY lubricate with vaseline if you can't find the old ac speedometer cable lubricant that hasn't been available for years. mike

I always use liquid graphite. It comes in a little tube, and I think I got my last one at AutoZone.

You use graphite on the odometer gear?

Or did you think I was talking about the cable?

I'm not sure how vaseline will work up in the high and low interior temps.

If liquid graphite works, I'll use it - Dave

Sorry Dave. Thought you were talking about the cable. You might check with a boat shop, and see what kind of special light lubes they use on their stuff. Also, sometimes the experienced mechanics at the Harley shops can give you some tips on stuff like this. Also, when you buy a set of points, they give you that little tube of grease for the distributor cam. That might be OK. If all else fails. Vaseline. Good Luck.

I like a product silicone based lube called SilGlide. I think it is easier on plastics etc.

I used white lithium grease on mine. However I only drive it in 50 degree weather and above. Right now in NY it is 3 degrees.

                Hello
If any of the Gears are Plastic I would NOT think Lacqer thinner would be a good idea it mite make them brittle?
