I had a friend check out a 4 speed car for me yesterday and he reported that there was a "chatter" sound/vibration when going from a standing start and letting out the clutch. The owner of the car said he tried 2 clutches to correct the problem, but it still exists. My guess is that the flywheel likely needs to be resurfaced. Would others agree or is there some other issues that might cause this problem? After the car is in motion the "chatter" is gone. Thanks in advance, Mark.

Re: Clutch "chatter"
Mark - the flywheel was probably overheated in it's past, and may have high spots etc. I would not let this stop me from getting the car, just factor costs in of removal, flywheel replacement (at least resurface, I would replace) and an new clutch disk setup from LUK. Make sure you balance the assembly, don't think it comes that way.....Craig- Top

Re: Clutch "chatter"
Mark,
Loose linkage and Motor Transmission mounts can cause this as well as Brokern ears on the transmission housing. The clutch release arm can bind on the pivot ball in the belhousing (It may need to be lubricated)Also Oil on the clutch from Rear Main seal or Greasy hands whenit is installed. One last thing the bellhousing may need to be indexed to the Crank centerline. Ive been there before and these thangs all could cause it . Like Craig syas though I would not let this stop me from buying the car.

Re: Clutch "chatter"
Actually, some of the racing clutches (dual disc) are known to chatter as you described, yet there is nothing wrong with them. Some of the manufacturers will even warn you of that when discussing your clutch needs. If you can, try to find out what type clutch was last installed in the vehicle.- Top
