This highlights something that I think is fundamentally wrong with our judging system, and one reason I havent been actively judging in a long time. The perceived value to the car has made the judging process too stressfull, both for the owner and the judges. I think it should not be possible to bring a first time judged car to a regional or a national. There should be step requirements to get to that stage. Some other car clubs us this system. You should be required to have it chapter judged first, and move up a structured course to get to the nationals. This would increase participation and knowledge and allow the owners to learn about their cars and how the system works. It used to be that a hobbyist owner would bring his car to a chapter meet to learn about and better his car. Now a rich middle aged speculator owner, who has bought or payed a restorer, brings his car for an instant Good Houskeeping Seal of Approval and immediately puts it up for sale.

Take along a socket wrench with extension and socket to loosen your spare tire carrier if a 63 or later car. They'll want to see the spare.

I took one to my Regional. Thanks to Mike Romano for letting me borrow his at the National.

Pat : why didn't you use the lug wrench? during a PV you'd have had to use the lug wrench. regards, mike

Wayne: not a bad idea forcing first timers to get judged at a chapter event.I've noticed more "checkbook restorere" in last 10-15 years and i agree these owners tend to be demanding and have bigger attitude than the owner who does his own restoration. I just don't let the checkbook dudes stress me out. Come on back to the judging field. we miss you. regards, mike

I like sockets and wrenches much better.

Besides, it's a lot easier to grab a socket and extension out of a bag than a lug wrench out of the jack well on a 72. It also takes less time at a National to walk 4 cars over to a friend than get into the jack well on a 72.

Its the lazy guy Sunfire Yellow syndrome. You were parked next to me and didn't want a 71 helping a 72. What gives????

Hey, for Flight Judging you were on the other end of the show floor.

                      Besides, I own a 71 and 72. I'm not prejudiced.

I had mine judged for the first time this year and the guys who suggested valium and other such things were right on. It's a very nerve racking process. In addition to all of the things already suggested I wanted a small carpet sit on and to drop the spare tire on and some fingernal polish remover to get the extra paint off my engine block. The judge who told me to remove that paint probably just wanted to give me some thing to do besides chew my fingers off, nails were long gone. It really helped. I focused and they inspected. Once it was all over it was a great day.

                          John,

I don't know if it is considered a tool, but a nice folding chair, is essential.

By now I am sure you have made a check list. My friend, check it again, trust me on this one. Don't forget to denote your mileage, the fire extinguisher, battery cut-off switch, and the NCRS sticker.

Calm down, and chill out. The money you layed down to have your car judged is by far the best money you have spent on it (the car).

If you have a camera take that too. And last, but most important, remember a 2nd Flight or even a 3rd Flight, is better than no Flight at all.

Good Luck, I am sure you will have a ball, your first time out.

                          Cheers,
                          Gregg

Your rite about the judging process.I went to a chapter meet in October for my first judging. I also was a nervous wreck, but everyone was terriffic. After the judging I was advised that the judges were senior master judges. They told me I had a great car and made some suggestions. When it was over I took Top Flight, you have no idea the feeling. I'm going to the Florida Regional with many things re-done and hopefully increase my point score even higher. This is a great organization, I was asked to help during the Regional and immediately accepted.

Okay guys it's my turn. John you can see by the length of this tread we all
care for each other. My car 72 original owner was chapter judged then regional
judged. It was a super time. At the regional some things a missed: wing nut was
lost by repair shop, they slipped on a ace harware nut, I was so excited on
the judging I didn't even notice. Don't leave old door stoppers on your
t-top hold down clamps. Mine were white and out of site. What was I thinking?
After a wonderful show I returned my car to this repair shop who couldn't get
the heater core fixed the first time. After about a week they called to say
the heater core was installed but "they had a problem" "your car's interior
caught on fire". This is a true story. They refused any blame. J.J.Grundy
was very nice in paying my claim. The rest of the story at another time.
So from one John to another, Have a good time.
I have a whole new understanding when someone says "their going to warm up
their car" or "I'm going to fire up my car". .....Big John
