I shimmed my starter this morning (GM Performance Gear Reduction Starter on 65 327-300hp) and took it out for a drive. When I pulled back in my driveway, I shut it off and tried to restart and got nothing at all. Checking around the starter for the problem, I found that I had the battery cable against the exhaust header and it had melted through the insulation. Upon getting all the wiring back in place, the starter runs continually without turning the key. Is it possible the damage is limited to the solenoid or is it possible I've caused considerable damage elsewhere. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
